Shannon Turner
visual anthropologist
Endlessly curious, dynamic, grounded.
I am captivated by the beauty and strangeness of the everyday, and deeply attuned to the many layers of human and non-human stories that encircle us at any given moment.
I strive to bring this sensibility to my research and creative projects.
I’m an independent artist-researcher with a visual anthropology background. I work with experimental, participatory, and sensory research methods to explore, analyse, and communicate about social phenomena. My practice includes documentary and experimental filmmaking, writing, research, and cultural consultancy.
My work builds from collaborative engagements with human and more-than-human bodies and dances in the interstitial spaces of science and art. Whether in research, writing, or artistic realms, at the heart of my practice lies a love of storytelling and a desire to create genuine moments of connection.
I have many skills to share…
Research
From the pre-production stages of documentary projects to engaged social sciences research and consulting. Working from a strong foundation of ethnographic and visual theory and method to dig deeper into the stories that surround us.
Writing & Editing
Writing and editing in research and academic contexts, popular media, and creative industries. Specialising in art and film texts. As an anthropologist, I have a keen eye and a particularly acute sense of appropriate style, voice, and tone.
Visual Media
Coming from a background in the art department for narrative film, now working primarily in experimental documentary and sensory ethnographic realms, I am attentive to the details and prize the ability of image to tell a story.
